Five Things to Avoid in Dog Training

Establishing new habits with your pet will take some time. So don't be in a hurry during your dog training. Remember that even with humans, the experts say that establishing a new habit is going to take 21 days. And believe me, a great part of dog training is - training you.

This is not to say that all dog training commands are going to take your dog that long to master. Some things can be learned in as little as 20 - 30 minutes. So let's look at some simple tips to help make your dog training a big success.

1. Avoid Getting Frustrated

My mum always used to say that 'Rome wasn't built in a day'. So don't get angry. This will only frustrate your pet and get you further upset. The secrets of good dog training are: (1) consistency and (2) repetition of the new task. If you do a little each day, this will be better than one big giant session that stresses you and your pet.

2. Don't Yell

Yelling is going to be counter productive. If your dog is distracted, call him or her back to the task at hand by changing your voice. It is good to combine hand movements with a command so that your dog can associate the sound and movement with the command. For example, when saying "down' use your hand to motion down. If you are encouraging the dog to roll over use your hand to make a circle pattern.

 3. Avoid being Submissive

As bad as getting angry and yelling at your pet is - being too submissive will defeat your dog training goals. Dogs are pack animals and respect the one in the lead. Let that be you. So be decisive and take charge. Otherwise your training will not progress.

4. Don't Give Up

Exercise some patience with your animal. Your pet is going to get it - but you can't give up. Look forward in your mind's eye to the time that your pet has mastered that new trick that you are presently teaching. It is amazing how seeing the successful end result of all your training - will change your motivational attitude for the good.

5. Don't be Stingy

Dogs love praise and they love treats. So don't be stingy and forget to give your dog a pat on the head, a cuddling of the ears or a small treat. Use whatever they particularly enjoy. Reward and praise will go a long way in making your dog training successful. Dogs will work their heart out for you because they love you - so please show it during your dog training.

As you exercise patience, and use repetition and rewards - you are going to obtain good dog training success. Remember, part of dog training is just have fun with the one you love.
