Dog Grooming Like The
Pros
Dog Grooming Made Easy
Dog grooming is needed for all dogs and is really quite simple to master once you get a routine
down. It is not only necessary for keeping your dog’s coat and skin looking good, but regular dog
grooming helps with your pet’s health and well being. Dog grooming gives you a chance to examine your pet for
fleas, parasites, patchy areas or skin irritation.
If you want to assemble a pet grooming kit, you could begin by
gathering: shampoo, comb, dog brush, towel or hair dryer, hair clipper, pen light, scissors, nail clippers, Q-tips
and baby oil.
When shampooing, it is important to choose a good quality natural shampoo. Don’t use soaps loaded with harsh
detergents because this might react with you dogs skin. Also please do not wash your pet in a commercial car wash
that has the ‘car wash wands’ for do-it-yourselfers. The car wash cycles can dispense commercially strong chemicals
that can burn.
If I have a choice and the weather is good, nothing beats shampooing outside on a nice sunny day. But if it is cold
outside, consider shampooing inside in the bathtub. When shampooing in the bathtub, I like using the hand held
shower nozzle to wet down and rinse my dog.
Everyone will develop their own method, but I like to start near the head and work towards the pet’s tail. First
begin, by wetting down the animal with water that is comfortable to the touch. Then I apply the shampoo and use my
fingertips to massage in the shampoo while giving my dog lots of praise.
When it comes to my dog’s ears, I like to use a penlight and examine them for debris and excess hair or wax build
up. You can use Q-tips to clean the inside of your dogs ears, but don’t go to deep.
When your are done, either towel dry your dog or use a hair dryer. But remember hair dryers can burn, so please
check the temperature setting. Always test it on yourself and you will be able to gage how fast you should be
moving the hair dryer and how far to keep the hair dryer away from your pets skin so they remain
comfortable.
